The main adjective of the Church was always the Gk. word “katholiki” meaning both complete and for the whole Ikoumeni/universe. This is why with Sts. Chrysostom, Basil and so others, St. Athanasios the Great (+373 a.d.) would say, “Whoever will be saved, before all things it is necessary that he hold to the katholiki pisti/faith.”
